LUXURY travel is still alive and kicking at a time when most travellers have cut back on frequency and budget, according to travel agents at the recently-concluded Asia Luxury Travel Market.

Chennai-based Baywatch Travels CEO Manish Kriplani said his luxury leisure bookings now accounted for 65 per cent of his company's total bookings, up from 35 per cent last year. The ballooning of his luxury travel segment allowed Kriplani to grow his bottom line by 20 per cent, despite a drop in corporate group bookings.

"I plan to start developing luxury programmes to South America, North Europe and Scandinavia now that South-east Asia, New Zealand and Australia are starting to become been-there-done-that destinations among the restless rich," Kriplani said.

Amritsar-based Dove Travels also reported a 15 per cent year-on-year boost in luxury FIT bookings.
