More JW Marriotts earmarked for Asia

MARRIOTT International wants to increase from 32 in 16 countries to 50-plus the number of JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts it operates globally, including several earmarked for Asia over the next five years.

Senior vice-president, Asia-Pacific and Australia, Mr Geoff Garside, said priorities in the region included Tokyo, Beijing, Taipei, Mumbai, New Delhi and Bali, but the chain was not excluding other opportunities.

"Asia will continue to be the leader in terms of our development of the JW Marriott brand," he said during the group's roadshow to Singapore today featuring its JW Marriott's in Bangkok, Phuket, Hong Kong, Jakarta and Surabaya.

Mr Garside explained the roadshow targeted at corporate clients and the media was to clearly define the brand and what it offered and stood for.

"JW Marriott is viewed as an extension of the Marriott (brand) and is not clearly defined. But we have clear standards of how different it is," he explained.

JW Marriott competes in the "emerging luxury tier between high-end luxury hotels and the upscale quality segment", according to Mr Garside.
