Game plan for Mekong countries
Bangkok

Bangkok
(31st Jan 2005)

INITIAL conclusions of an Asian Development Bank-sponsored strategy and action plan for the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) will be announced during the 10th PATA Mekong Tourism Forum, taking place in Siem Reap from March 25 to 27.

The theme of the forum is Celebrating a Decade of Co-operation. PATA vice-president, development, Mr Peter Semone, said: “The nine Mekong Tourism Forums since 1996 have played a pivotal role in harnessing the collective strengths of the public and private sectors in the subregion. A series of new challenges for future co-operation will be presented at this year's forum.”

Speakers include University of Hawaii School of Travel Industry Management dean, Prof Walter Jamieson and UNESCO regional adviser for culture in Asia-Pacific, Mr Richard A Engelhardt. Prof Jamieson will examine the emerging human resource and capacity needs of GMS, while Mr Engelhardt will make recommendations aimed at changing the occasionally destructive and contentious relationship between tourism and heritage conservation.
