ACCOR launched its budget hotel sector, Formule 1, in Southeast Asia last week. The first hotel, Formule 1 Menteng, is expected to open late this year in Jakarta with 81 rooms.

Accor and joint venture partner, PT Jakarta Setiabudi Internasional (JSI), have signed an agreement that calls for the development of Formule 1 hotels in key commercial centres around the country.

Accor managing director-Asia Pacific, Mr Michael Issenberg, said Indonesia was an ideal country to launch Formule 1 in Southeast Asia. “Ibis quickly established itself as the number one international economy brand in Indonesia after it was introduced here in 1994 and we expect Formule 1 to enjoy similar success,” he said, adding Formule 1 will offer rates of under US$22 a night.

JSI president director, Mr Amir Abdul Rachman, said: “We believe demand for budget hotels is growing in Indonesia and Accor has extensive experience in operating Formule 1 around the world. The Formule 1 Menteng will appeal to both domestic corporate and leisure clients.”

Mr Issenberg said other possible future locations for Formule 1 hotels include Medan, Bandung, Cilegon, Balikpapan, Banjarmasin, Pontianak, Denpasar, Cirebon, Pekalongan, Semarang, Lampung and Makassar.

Formule 1 is Accor's budget hotel brand which promotes the concept of functional rooms with a single price for up to three people. There are more than 370 Formule 1 hotels around the world with Indonesia becoming the 12th country to operate the brand.
