DoT pulls out all the stops in ATF preparations
Manila (2005-11-04)

THE Department of Tourism (DoT) is stepping up the momentum in its preparations to host the 25th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF), held in Davao City from January 13 to 21 next year.

Fourteen properties have been designated official hotels and more than 1,600 rooms have been blocked for delegates. The Davao Host Council has set up a housing bureau to handle all hotel bookings, to be made online at the official ATF 2006 website: www.atfdavao.com. Accommodation inquiries should be directed to email: atfdavaohousing@yahoo.com.ph.

DoT secretary, Mr Joseph Ace H Durano said preparations, spearheaded by the Philippine Host Committee, an inter-agency task force he created on orders of president Gloria Arroyo specifically to formulate and implement programmes and activities, was being fronted by a tourism and ATF veteran. ATF 2006 secretary-general and Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation (PCVC) executive director Daniel Corpuz is taking the lead in putting the event together.

Davao's beautification committee is sprucing up the city's attractions, installing additional street lights, and widening roads, while the tourism committee is organising half-day city and countryside tours and the special events committee is preparing a mini-production of Davao's Kadayawan Festival.

Likewise, the Philippine Travel Agencies Association is lining up seven post-ATF tours for trade buyers and international media.

National flag carrier Philippine Airlines heads the ATF air transportation committee, and TTG Asia Media is organising Travex at the NCCC Exhibition Center from January 18 to 20.

Mr Durano said: "This year's ATF theme Celebrating the Many Faces of ASEAN salutes the organisation's unity in diversity both in showcasing regional co-operation and supporting the individual tourism pursuits of its multiculture member countries."

ATF 2006 marks the 25th anniversary of this event since its inauguration in Malaysia in 1981.
