Talk is cheap at Changi

Singapore  (2005-12-01)

TRAVELLERS can now make cheaper international calls at Singapore Changi Airport with the introduction of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phone service at the departure and transit lounges of Terminals 1 and 2.

Usually, a phone call to Japan costs about S$0.40 (US$0.24) per minute based on IDD charges, but with a VOIP the call costs about S$0.10 per minute. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has introduced "MediaRing Global Talk Lounges" which are fitted with more than 20 individual VOIP phone booths.

Travellers need to make a S$5 deposit at the service counter before making an overseas call, where unused credits will be fully refunded. Staff at the VOIP phone lounge will also be on hand to assist travellers who encounter difficulties.

For the launch, international calls to Canada, US, France, UK, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Australia are now free until December 7.
