Agents fail to elect new FATA leaders

Raini Hamdi, Davao City  (2006-01-17)

THE Federation of ASEAN Travel Agents (FATA) was unable to elect a new president, vice-president and treasurer yesterday.

The positions are rotated each year and are to be filled by the head of the travel agency association in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos respectively. However, they were not present yesterday.

FATA members yesterday approved that henceforth, the presidency would be on an election rather than rotation basis, a move already taken by the ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA) and ASEAN Hotel & Restaurant Association.

Former ASEANTA president, Tunku Iskandar, observed that the chief advantages of an elected president over a rotated president were greater commitment and continuity (two years compared with one with rotation).

This is more crucial in light of the challenges facing agents today. National Association of Travel Agents Singapore president, Mr William Tan, will continue as FATA president until a new president is elected, which is expected to be at the end of April.
