Myanmar wants hosting chance
Pauline Tan, Davao City  (2006-01-17)

MYANMAR may make a request to host ATF in "two to four years' time" if its regional partners "give it a chance" to do so, and says its decision to forego the ASEAN chair and the hosting of ATF in 2006 had not affected its standing with the grouping.

Ministry of Hotel and Tourism director-general, Mr Htay Aung, told TTG Asia Official ATF Daily: "We have a very close relationship with the ASEAN secretariat and member countries of the grouping. We look forward to hosting ATF in a few years. If we have the chance, we will propose to do so."

A delegate from another ASEAN tourism authority who declined to be named said: "They should bring it up if they are really interested, because maybe they could do it in about four years after Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam host the show, before the cycle starts again with Brunei."

Tourism arrivals to Myanmar were about 700,000 last year, a growth of two to three per cent from the previous year. Tourists from China and Thailand remain the top markets from Asia. As for longhaul visitors, "there is potential from Italy, Spain and France", Mr Htay Aung said.
