THE Vietnam Civil Aviation Administration has approved a plan for the Russian airline Dalavia to offer flights between Vladivostock and Ho Chi Minh City.

Tour operators said the airline planned to operate five round-trip flights each month between the two countries.

Last year, Vietnam saw a surge in the number of Russian tourists, and that trend is continuing this year. In a bid to win even more tourists, Ho Chi Minh City-based tour operator Ben Thanh Tourist on Tuesday announced its partnership with Moscow-based Top Tour.

Top Tour's director, Mr Andrey Matveev, said the company would promote Vietnam as a promising new destination at an international tourism exhibition to be held in March in Moscow.

Vietnam expects its longstanding friendly relationship with Russia to help in its bid to promote the country as an exotic Asian destination.

Last year in October, officials with the national tourism body, the Viet Nam Administration of Tourism, travelled to Moscow to discuss joint efforts to launch new tourism packages to Vietnam.

Late last year, Russian media began to step up its coverage of Vietnam, with TV journalists shooting a programme in the country for Russian state television, to be called Vietnamese Week.
