India names new tourism minister

Ritesh Gupta, New Delhi  (2006-02-03)

MS Ambika Soni has replaced Ms Renuka Chowdhury as India's new Union minister of tourism and culture. The latter is now in charge of the Department of Women & Child Welfare.

The new appointment follows prime minister, Manmohan Singh's, first comprehensive reshuffle and expansion of his 20-month-old Council of Ministers.

The new tourism minister emphasised that every effort should be taken to promote the destination's ancient diversified culture, world heritage sites, wildlife sanctuaries and national parks and the great variety it offers from the Himalayan mountains, to the deserts of Rajasthan, to the beaches and islands.

Ms Soni said she would continue the initiatives taken by the tourism ministry in last 18 months and directed tourism officials to create an effective plan to realise the potential of the tourism sector for growth and employment generation.
