Thai AirAsia under investigation

Mark Bode, Bangkok (2006-02-07)

THAI AirAsia is in danger of losing its Thai airline licence following the sale of its parent company to Singapore's Temasek Holdings.

The Transport Ministry is probing the airline's shareholding structure in the wake of Temasek's acquisition of Shin Corp.

The ministry said a local airline must be at least 51 per cent Thai-owned. Before the sale to Temasek, Shin Corp had a 51 per cent stake in Thai AirAsia with the remaining stake held by AirAsia of Malaysia.

Thai AirAsia CEO, Mr Tassapon Bijleveld, is now believed to be the airline's sole Thai owner with a stake of one per cent.

The airline can continue its normal services while the investigation is ongoing.
