AirAsia to retain stake in Thai subsidiary

Bangkok  (2006-02-13)

AIRASIA will keep its stake in Thai AirAsia following the sale of the latter's parent company to Singapore's Temasek Holdings.

Agence France-Presse quoted AirAsia executive director, Mr Kamarudin Meranun, as saying the Malaysian budget carrier would not dilute its 49 per cent stake in its Thai unit.

Mr Meranun said: "We have come to an agreement that our shareholdings will not be diluted and our rights in the existing agreement will remain in force. As far as the restructuring is concerned, what needs to be done will be done at Shin Corp level."

Thai AirAsia said last week it would find new partners in order to comply with foreign ownership rules after the sale of its main shareholder, Shin Corp, to Temasek.
