Wyndham to wow China with 80 additions by year-end
Prudence Lui, Hong Kong  (2006-09-12)

WYNDHAM Hotel Group is sparking off head-to-head competition with the big boys in China by targeting 80 properties before the end of this year.

A spin-off from Cendant Corporation since last August, Wyndham is under the umbrella of Wyndham Worldwide Corporation and encompasses five brands in Asia - Wyndham, Super 8, Days Inn, Ramada and Howard Johnson.

Regional vice president Eastern Asia and Indo China, Mr Stephen Young said: "China and India have been the fastest growing countries in Asia. Our brand is new to the market but we've leapfrogged from 30 hotels in China last year to 51 hotels this month. Nine others are expected to open by the end of 2006 and this takes the system size to 60.

"The first Wyndham Hotels and Resorts will debut in China next year. We've signed three letters of intent recently. The first will be a 600-room property in Xiamen, due to open in the second quarter of 2007. The other two hotels are located in Shanghai and Zhoushan (near Ningbo). Ramada Encore will become the additional Ramada brand portfolio when they open their doors in Wuxi next month and Shanghai in the first quarter of 2007."

The group is planning another Ramada hotel in the New Territories of Hong Kong and is actively discussing projects in Macau.
