Courageous plan by Lion Air

Jakarta  (2007-05-02)

LION AIR, one of Indonesia's low cost carriers, is planning to turn itself into a full-service airline by the end of this year with the arrival of its new Boeing 737-900ERS.

Speaking to the media during the launch of the first B737-900ERS yesterday, Lion Air spokesman, Mr Hasyim Arsal Alhabsi, said: "Lion Air will concentrate on operating as full service airline, while Wings Air (its sister airline) will continue to be a low-cost carrier."

By becoming a full-service carrier, Lion Air will add f&b services, but will maintain a two seat-class category. Mr Hasyim also said prices would not increase as the new aircraft was capable of reducing fuel costs by 30 per cent.
