THE Swiss Travel Mart 2007 kicked off yesterday in Basel, the city where the UEFA Euro 2008 Cup football tournament will kick off next year.

The mart, held every two years, is attended by 140 Asian sellers this time. In a bid to tap the important China market, the Swiss are looking into easing visa restrictions for Chinese travellers in the near future. There are 54 Chinese buyer delegates at the show, almost double the next largest Asian contingent.

Asian buyers told TTG Daily News clients wanted much more out of the country than before, and were willing to treat it as a mono destination for stays as long as a week. As such, they are seeking new out new areas, such as the northeast, and new products, such as spas.

Switzerland is considered particularly appealing for Asian incentive groups. Hong Kong's Towa Tours senior product manager, Ms Rosanna Leung, said: "In Chinese culture, mountains are significant as they represent the climb to the top. Switzerland is most famous for its mountains, and this is a great motivator for my incentive clients."
