MERPATI Nusantara Airlines will add 10 of Boeing 737-300 aircraft to strengthen its domestic network this year and re-open routes in western Indonesia, which it had to suspend due to financial difficulties a few years ago.

Merpati president, Mr Hotasi Nababan, told local media the first two leased aircraft would arrive in June.

The routes targeted to re-open are between Jakarta and provincial capitals on Sumatera Island, including Medan, Padang, Pekanbaru, Bengkulu, Palembang, Batam, Jambi, and Bandar Lampung.

Merpati now operates 30 aircraft, comprising of B737 300 series and 200 series, and Fokker 100. The airline has been concentrating on eastern Indonesia (Papua, Sulawesi and East Nusa Tenggara) in recent years.
