Changi's Terminal 3 to open in January 2008

Singapore  (2007-05-30)

CHANGI Airport's S$1.75 billion (US$1.14 billion) Terminal 3, which will have an annual capacity of 22 million passengers, will open on January 9 next year, bringing the aviation gateway's total handling capacity to 70 million passengers a year.

Terminal 3's key features include a 300m by 200m roof punctuated with 919 skylights that will allow natural light into the building. This lighting feature also allows for a greater variety of tree and shrubs to be introduced within the terminal including a 300m green wall.

Minister of transport, Mr Raymond Lim, said: "It is like a microcosm of Singapore itself - a bright and vibrant tropical city."

In the departure hall, the 132 check-in counters grouped into 5 islands are built lower to facilitate better communication between staff members and passengers. Of the 28 aerobridge gates, eight are Airbus A380-capable with an additional loading bridge that connects directly to the aircraft's upper deck.

Singapore Airlines will be the exclusive user of Terminal 3 although some of its services will continue to operate out of Terminal 2. Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore's senior engineer (Airport Planning) Mr Koh Ming Sue, said: "Trial flights involving Singapore's Ministry of Defence charters and a number of SIA flights will be handled at Terminal 3 in November 2007 to further test the its facilities and systems."

Towards the later part of 2007 and ahead of an open house for the public, CAAS plans to conduct preview visits to Terminal 3 for travel agents.
