ETIHAD Airways has decided to suspend its thrice-weekly operations between Abu Dhabi and Colombo from September 9.

Asia-Pacific regional general manager, Mr Charles Phelps-Penry, said this decision was made in line with economic and other developments. This decision is also based on the fact that despite load factors between 75 and 80 per cent, the airline was not achieving projected levels of profitability. "Etihad wants to ensure they break-even by 2010," he said.

It has instead signed a codeshare agreement with SriLankan Airlines for traffic from its current thrice-weekly operation between Abu Dhabi and Colombo to be accommodates. "SriLankan Airlines flight frequencies to Abu Dhabi will remain the same initially, but will be reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure we meet market demand," SriLankan Airlines worldwide passenger sales head, Mr Manoj Gunawardena, said.
