HOSPITALS accredited by the Department of Tourism (DoT) for the latter's medical tourism programme have formed the Philippine Association of Health Organizations on Medical Tourism (PAHOMT).

The association aims to support the DoT in globally promoting medical tourism to local hospitals and clinics. The association is headed by Ms Alma Jimenez of the St Frances Cabrini Medical Center.

PAHOMT now comprises five hospitals: St Frances Cabrini Medical Center, UST Hospital, WorldCiti Medical Center, Capitol Medical Center, and Asian Hospital. It intends to expand its membership this year to include the other 13 DoT-accredited hospitals and clinics.

Ms Jimenez said PAHOMT would hold a roadshow in the Middle East to network with corporate buyers such as the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco).

The DoT is targetting medical tourists from the Middle East, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Europe for its range of medical and cosmetic treatments and is working to include spas and medical tourism in the Philippines' Investment Priority Plan. The Philippines has won the bid to host the fourth World Health Tourism Congress in 2009. The congress is expected draw 350 foreign delegates including 150 healthcare buyers.
