A price war has broken out on the lucrative Hong Kong-Mumbai route sparked by newcomer Jet Airways. Its decision to drop fares by about 35 per cent for its direct daily services between Mumbai and Hong Kong was matched within 24 hours on April 2 by Cathay Pacific.

Jet, a private airline in India, launched Airbus 330 services between the two business centres on April 14, with the carrier claiming a full load for the inaugural flight.

Cathay's speedy response to the Indian carrier's discount initiative appears to have stunned the marketplace and by some accounts, Jet itself.
