BIMAN Bangladesh Airlines is buying four Boeing 777-300ERs and four B787-8 Dreamliners worth about US$1.26 billion from Boeing. The deal includes purchase rights for two of each type. Separately, Biman signed a memorandum of understanding with Boeing for the provision of two B737-800s for use on short- and medium-haul routes with purchase rights for another two aircraft. Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism special assistant to the chief adviser, Mr Mahbub Jamil, said: "In the history of Bangladesh, no single deal this big has been made. This deal is not the end of the game, it's just the beginning."

Stiff competition from within and outside Bangladesh, coupled with record-breaking fuel prices, has made this long-overdue fleet renewal crucial. Biman's current medium- and long-haul fleet comprises four "elderly" DC-10-30s and four Airbus 313-300s. It recently leased a B747-200 from Northwest Airlines and will add another leased B747-200 shortly. Biman's network stretches from New York and Brussels to Tokyo and Singapore.
