JEJU Air, launched its first international route this month, using the 189-seater B737-800 jet. The low-cost carrier (LCC), which started in June 2006, had operated only on domestic routes, between Jeju and Seoul, and Busan and Cheongju.

The LCC now flys to Hiroshima, Japan and plans to stretch routes to include services between Incheon and Kitakyushi, and Incheon and Kochi on July 18 and 26.

Flights for July are already booked-out. The LCC plans to operate 28 charter flights by year-end and aims to start regular routes to Japan and China within a year, and also irregular routes to South-east Asian countries by 2010.

According to the LCC, its international operation will offer 20 to 30 per cent cheaper flight fares than the main carriers, and provide a wider choice by flying to destinations where the other airlines do not fly.
