JET Airways has announced in a press release it would pay travel agents three per cent commission on gross fare (defined as basic fare plus fuel surcharge) of domestic and international tickets sold in India with immediate effect.

Citing recognition of the difficult economic environment for the travel industry as a whole, Jet Airways arrived at the decision to pay commission following a “constructive and intensive dialogue with the travel agency associations”.

Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) president, Mr Rajinder Rai, told TTG Daily News: “We greatly welcome the decision of Jet Airways's management. This has come at a time when the industry is worried about the existence of travel agents. We are also negotiating with Kingfisher Airlines for the same.”

All six travel trade Associations of India (TAAI, TAFI, IAAI, ADTOI, IATO & ETAA)  withdrew support to Jet Airways and its subsidiary JetLite on December 4 in demonstration of their dissatisfaction with airlines' zero-commission implementation (TTG Daily News Dec 4).

JetLite will continue with the transaction fee model, a practice that has been adopted by other low-cost carriers.

Fifteen airlines, including India's three major airlines, had stopped giving agents commissions from November 1. The associations had demanded airlines to restore commissions after the transaction fee model agreed by Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines did not work out.
