Ritz-Carlton set to buck trend

THE Ritz-Carlton Hotels are determined to win business even during the economic crisis, which hits the top end of the market most.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotels in Indonesia have experienced a drop in occupancy in January due to the global economic crisis, a trend most hotels are probably seeing.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company spokesman said: “Our strategy is to get the business. We are listening to our clients and we are willing to renegotiate our contracted rates with clients, especially those who have some 10,000 room nights with us, for example. We have been charging a premium rate, so lowering our prices a bit will still mean good rates for us.”

Besides, he said, business for the hotels did not only mean room occupancy, but also banquets and f&b. “The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, for example, gains 50 per cent of revenue from rooms and the rest is from MICE, f&b, and even outside catering.

“In Tokyo, rooms contribute some 25 per cent of our business, while the rest is from f&b, weddings, and other events. So, there are many opportunities to get the business we need.”

On expansion plan in Indonesia,  he said The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company would like to have a hotel in Bali after it left the current The Ritz-Carlton, Bali Resort & Spa in April and was already looking for a suitable location.

“We are also looking at having a couple of The Ritz-Carlton Reserve-branded properties in Indonesia.”

A brand extension of The Ritz-Carlton, the Reserve is a small, intimate, eco-friendly luxury resort in a remote area of a destination. The first property will open in Krabi, Thailand in June and the company expects to have between 12 and 15 such properties around the world.
