SINGAPORE'S first international economy-class hotel, the 538-room Ibis Singapore on Bencoolen, officially opens its doors today and claims it is running close to full occupancy over the past two weeks.

Rooms are sold at a special opening rate of S$148 (US$97) and S$138 for online bookings.

General manager, Mr Puneet Dhawan, said the hotel was seeing bookings from as far as North America, and it expected even better forward bookings as more room inventory was released for online bookings.

The largest Ibis outside Paris (the largest, in Paris, has some 575 rooms) aims to revolutionise the city-state's offering of affordable accommodation for leisure and corporate travellers. At present, Singapore's economy accommodation segment is only served by local brands.

Singapore senior minister of state for trade and industry, Mr S Iswaran, who was present at the hotel's opening ceremony, pointed out a shift in demand towards value-driven accommodation in these difficult times and believed Ibis would appeal to travellers seeking greater value.

Accor Asia-Pacific chairman and CEO, Mr Michael Issenburg, concurred and said the Ibis properties at Bencoolen and Novena would provide an accommodation product to support the Singapore government's aim to develop the city-state as a low-cost carrier hub.

All rooms at Ibis Singapore on Bencoolen are contemporarily furnished with large bay windows, a decent-sized work desk, flat-screen TVs with cable channels and en-suite bathroom. Free broadband and wi-fi access is also available in all rooms.

And unlike most economy-class properties in Singapore, this first ibis property offers guests a full-service restaurant and bar.
