Singapore's arrivals and room revenue decline in January

VISITOR arrivals to Singapore reached 771,000 in January this year, registering a decline of  12.9 per cent compared to January 2008, according to a release by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).  

Visitor days were estimated at 3.3 million days, a  decrease of 6.9 per cent.    
Indonesia (118,000), China (105,000), Australia (80,000), India (47,000) and  Malaysia (44,000), were Singapore's top five visitor-generating markets. These markets accounted for 51 per cent of total visitor arrivals for the month.    

On the hotel front, Singapore gazetted hotels were estimated to generate S$124 million (US$80.3 million) in room revenue, representing a decrease of 29.9 per cent.    

Average room rate (ARR) was estimated at S$209, representing a  decrease of 11.7 per cent.  Average occupancy rate (AOR) for gazetted hotels was estimated to reach 67 per cent, posting a 17.7 percentage point  decrease. Revenue per available room (Revpar) decreased 30.2 per cent  to reach S$140.    

The 2008 Formula One SingTel Singapore Grand Prix, were attended by more than 100,000 spectators, of which more than 40 per cent were tourists, who generated S$168 million in tourism receipts.  
   
Across the board, Singapore's hotel sector benefited during the F1 period from September 24 to 28,  2008. Singapore gazetted hotels recorded an estimated AOR of 75 per cent, with  S$616 in ARR, and S$462 in Revpar.
