Sands scoops 30 contracts

Raini Hamdi and S Puvaneswary, Singapore (2009-10-20)

JUST months into its opening, Marina Bay Sands (MBS) has signed more than 30 contracts with major tour wholesalers from eight countries, with executive director of sales Paul Stocker reporting "a definite upturn" in demand and commitment from buyers.

Billed as game-changing for South-east Asia due to their size and scope, MBS and the other biggie, Resorts World Sentosa, are being watched with mixed feelings by neighbouring Malaysia. Some agents believe the pair will cannibalise room nights in Malaysia, while others say they will only strengthen the Malaysia-Singapore tour series and make the two neighbours a stronger contender to destinations such as Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, especially for the China and Taiwan outbound markets.

Stocker would not be drawn into a debate on the impact of the mega openings on redistributing arrivals to the region, only saying that MBS can expect high occupancies and to be "a rate leader" in Singapore as soon as it opens, judging from requests for more allotments from wholesale operators recently, signalling greater optimism among them.
