THE INDONESIAN tourism industry called on the national tourism authority to embark on more sophisticated marketing campaigns to bring a surge in arrivals.

The trade expressed their sentiments following president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's official announcement last night of the new cabinet line-up, which included the return of Jero Wacik to spearhead the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Indonesia Journey managing director Agus Winarko said: "The tourism authority should be able to use the positive conditions (facing the country) to create a quantum leap' (in arrivals) and not just a minimal increase."

Jogjakarta Promotion Board executive director Wiendu Nuryanti said: "The government should not only look at what they have been doing to plan ahead, but should learn from what other countries are doing."

PanTravel president director Elly Hutabarat said: "Indonesia should embark on more sophisticated marketing and promotion campaigns."

Bali Tourism Board chairman Ngurah Wijaya said expanding the marketing budget would not be enough: "The minister...must also achieve cooperation with strategic government offices such as the ministry of transportation, immigration office, and the regional governments."
