Brazil sees Asian interest grow

BRAZIL is emerging as tantalising new flavour among Asian buyers but so have worries the destination is set to repeat the "Beijing 2008" effect following its success in landing two mega sporting events.

The destination, which followed up its win to host the 2014 World Cup with the 2016 Olympic prize, is proving a hit in the region. Arrivals from China soared 39 per cent, Japan 28 per cent and South Korea six per cent last year over 2007.

Interest is also picking up beyond these markets. Jakarta-based ATS president director David Harsono said leisure customers were asking for Brazil. New Delhi-based Holidays by Weldon has also noted growing interest in Brazil but demand has been kept in check by language barriers, according to managing director Guldeep Singh Sahni.

"South American beauty pageants and Rio de Janeiro's carnival have drawn the attention of Indians who want to travel somewhere different. Language barriers have, however, deterred them from the destination," said Sahni.

US-based Unique World Cruises' president Mishia Radulovic warned of rising prices as a result of increased demand for the destination, especially in wake of the recent sports wins. Brazil's price hikes have prompted Radulovic to look for unique Asian products at ITB Asia .

"The cost of products in Brazil is up to 40 per cent higher than in Asia. In addition, air connections (from the US) are not good, and service is bad. We are looking to grow our Asian offering, which offers more value for money to our customers and many safe destinations."
