India to cut red-tape for hotel projects

Ahir Bhairab Borthakur, Bangalore (2010-02-02)

INDIA is considering setting up a single window clearance system for development of its hospitality sector.

According to tourism secretary Sujit Banerjee, a hotel developer currently has to go through numerous government departments to get clearances for opening a new hotel.

“A single window clearance system will make the process simpler for developers by ensuring that projects get all the clearances from one department, without any hassle,” he said.

Leading trade bodies such as the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) and Hotel Association of India (HAI) have been actively lobbying the government for such a system to spur development of the country's hospitality sector.

Banerjee added that the government is also working to set up a Hospitality Development and Promotion Board, a body that will address problems facing the hospitality industry, assist in land acquisition and provide investments.
