Berlin (2010-11-30)

TRAVEL demand from India, Brazil and Switzerland is likely to be strong in 2011, with countries such as the US and France recording weaker sentiment.

According to a survey compiled by IPK International and commissioned by ITB Berlin, 49 per cent of Brazilians intended to travel in 2011, with 21 per cent wanting a holiday similar to the one they took in 2010.

Indians were also enthusiastic about travel for next year, with 43 per cent of respondents saying they were planning one or more trips and 33 per cent considering trips similar to those they had last year.

By contrast, 32 per cent of Americans were intending to travel less next year and 16 per cent said they were unlikely to travel in 2011.

Among the European nations, the French stood out with 20 per cent of respondents who said they had no travel plans for next year.

This figure was only eight per cent for the Swiss, who were the most eager to travel among European citizens. Some 47 per cent of respondents planned to take as many trips in 2011 as they did this year, with 32 per cent believing it was possible they would travel more in 2011.
