SOME Bali hotels may have to turn down bookings between the last week of May and the first week of June when Indonesia's largest convention event is held.

The island is to host the the preparatory ministerial meeting of the World Summit on Sustainable Tourism, from May 27 to June 6, which expected to attract 6,000 delegates worldwide.

Delegates will be accommodated in the major tourist areas of Nusa Dua, Sanur and Kuta.

Bali Tourism Board (BTB) chairman, Mr Putu Antara, said: "Looking at forward bookings, some hotels expect occupancies to reach 70 per cent even without the event."

He said business was returning to Bali after the 9-11 tragedy.

Starwood Hotels and Resorts regional director of marketing Indonesia, Mr Jeremy Brook, said: "We do have to "close our system" for the event, as both the Sheraton Nusa Indah Resort and the Sheraton Laguna Nusa Dua are hosting the VVIP delegates."

At press time, bookings for both hotels have reached 90 per cent.
