THE ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA) has appointed a Singaporean, Mr Sebastian Lo, as its first-ever executive director.

He will assume the salaried full-time position, to be based in Kuala Lumpur, on March 24. His task will be to fulfil the objectives of the association and implement its projects. Mr Lo gained travel industry experience while working for Carlson Wagonlit Travel in Singapore. His more recent work experience has been in the fields of advertising and event management.

He was chosen from over 200 applicants who were shortlisted to a final six. After being managed by volunteers ever since its inception more than 21 years ago, ASEANTA's Board of Directors decided last year to establish a permanent secretariat in Kuala Lumpur. It will be located in premises provided by Tourism Malaysia in the Putra World Trade Centre.

ASEANTA's managing committee comprising its president Mr Argus Salim (from Malaysia), deputy president, Ms Elly Hutabarat (Indonesia), secretary-general, Tunku Iskandar (Malaysia), and treasurer, Ms Lee Liat Cheng (Singapore), will meet in Singapore on March 17 to approve operational procedures for the Secretariat.
