HONG Kong tourism has “officially” recovered from SARS, Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) officials say. Visitor arrivals in August were up for the first time since the disease emerged early in the year, with arrivals last month up 9.6 per cent (to 1.64 million) on August last year.

It was the first time since March that monthly arrivals had not shown a year-on-year decline. “The recovery was very strong,” Hong Kong acting chief executive, Mr Donald Tsang, said.

HKTB chairman, Ms Selina Chow, said tourism had staged a recovery surpassing her greatest optimism. They were both speaking at the start of a new US$25 million campaign focusing on movie star, Jackie Chan. “Tourists are my friends and Hong Kong is my home," says Chan in advertisements which are part of the “Hong Kong. Live it. Love it” campaign.

This will be broadcast in more than 30 countries, including the US and UK, Canada, Taiwan, Japan, several South-east Asian countries and mainland China. Chan portrays a laid-back host showing how Hong Kong welcomes visitors.
