A SENIOR Swire Pacific executive will be the next director-general of the Kuala Lumpur-based Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA). Mr Andrew Herdman, who for seven years has been corporate spokesman for the Swire Group which controls Cathay Pacific, takes over a job which is seen as one of the most influential aviation posts in Asia.

The 17 Asia-Pacific airlines in AAPA include almost all major carriers in the region.

Mr Herdman takes over from Mr Richard Stirland, also a former Swire executive, who has held the post for a decade. He gets the job at a time when airlines are facing a number of challenges including soaring fuel prices and the sudden flowering of many lost cost airlines.

Mr Herdman said yesterday AAPA would advance and expand its role as the trade body of Asia-Pacific airlines. "Their voice will be heard," he vowed.

Airlines in the AAPA include Eva Airways, China Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Thai Airways, Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airlines, Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas and Air New Zealand.
