KYAI Haji Hashim Muzadi, a vice president candidate who is President Megawati Soekarnoputri's running mate in the upcoming election, has voiced his commitment to the growth of tourism in the country.

During talks with tourism associations last night, Mr Muzadi, said: “The two sectors that will support the recovery of the Indonesian economy are agriculture and tourism.

“But that is not enough. You also need to get the support from the House of Representatives in order that programmes can proceed. So we will need to work with them as well.”

When asked his views on the fact that tourism was often seen by the Muslim groups negatively, Mr Muzadi, who is also the chairman of Indonesia's largest Muslim social community, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), said: “There are various things against the religious teaching, such as prostitution and gambling, but that is not because of tourism. Whether there is tourism or not, gambling and prostitution are there.”

Mr Muzadi also suggested the tourism stakeholders put forward a candidate for the post of minister for tourism to whoever is elected president and vice president.
